balance: busy vs lazy

I like caveats.

I like balance.

It seems like the Christian life especially is full of things to balance.  Speak the Truth, but speak it in love.  Live a humble yet bold life.  Let your actions speak

Here's another balance I've been thinking about lately.  Being busy vs lazy.

I love this quote.  As Americans, I think it's so easy to be busy all the time whether it is with activities or just with social media and overstimulation.  In college, especially, I remember people who were *always* running to an activity to the point that they made themselves sick and really couldn't do anything well.  That's not the way we were meant to live!

But this is where the caveat comes in.  It's easy to take this to the extreme which results in selfishness and acedia.  We need to live simple lives, but we also need to live intentional lives.  So if Caleb and I say "no" to a ministry at Church because we don't want a hectic, rushing life, we have to be careful to not simply waste that time.

Ahh.  Balance.  It's so hard.

  1. I'm glad you touched on simplicity in our lives and schedules. As I've gotten to know the Brethren in Christ church better, one of the core pillars or whatever you'd like to call it that I've been learning about is simplicity. I've been working on figuring that out materially, but hadn't thought of it in this respect. Thanks for your insight!

  2. Nikki, I'm sure that you could teach me much more about simplicity than I could teach you! Wish we could sit down and chat about life! I was just thinking of you the other day because I was remember our RAing year together. :)

  3. Callie, I have heard similar messages over the past year or so. I loooove having places to go, people to talk and listen to, and tasks to check of my to-do list. Very rarely do I see my to-do lost has a burden - I look at my list and see all the possibilities of ministry. I have prayed and searched Scripture and sought Biblical wisdom. I feel like I keep trying to find a flaw in myself because I love to stay busy. And it's really not just the act of staying busy - but to be productively busy. I feel like my days are as numbered as everyone else's and I want to do as much as I can for the Name of Christ. Of course this requires much prayer and stillness on my part. I guess, at times, it feels like I'm hearing that being busy is as close to sinfulness as laziness which it can be, but keeping busy is not always bad. There were times at Cedarville that keeping me busy in ministry for Christ was what got me through the day with a thankful and joyous heart.
